How to Make Bone Broth - for FREE!

Did you know that bone broth has 1 gram of protein per ounce of broth!?  So a cup of broth has 8 grams of protein!  That's the same as an egg.

This is definitely the cheapest way to add healthy protein into your diet.

How is it free?  Let me explain how we make broth in our house.

Step 1:
We keep a stock pot in our freezer at all times.  Whenever we eat meat (beef, pork, chicken, lamb, fish, etc), we scrape the bones into the stock pot.
Step 2:
When the stock pot is full (or when we run out of broth), we take the pot out of the freezer, fill it with water (roughly 1 lb of bones per quart of water), add a little Apple Cider Vinegar, and simmer it overnight (we just stick it on our woodstove).

Step 3:
Then we take it off the stove and let it cool (which takes about 8 hours for our large pot).  We strain out the bones through a colander, and then pour the broth into quart size yogurt containers.  (Only fill 3/4 of the way because it expands when it freezes.)
Step 4:
We freeze these containers, so it lasts...forever, and then pull one out as needed.  It's about 3 cups of broth per container.

What do you do with bone broth?

Well, you can just drink it.  It's super rich and delicious.  But we usually use it in place of water to cook rice or barley.

We also use it as a base for soups.

Or the liquid for braising meat.  (It's great for braised short ribs 😁.  Recipe to follow.)

Why add Apple Cider Vinegar?

The vinegar helps pull the minerals out of the bones, so you get maximum bang for your buck (though it's free, so your ROI is infinity).  You only need about 1 TBSP of vinegar per gallon of water.

So next time you eat pork chops, chicken legs, or ribeye steak, don't just scrape the bones into the trash.  Save them and make nutrient-dense, delicious bone broth FOR FREE!
