Bulk Chicken FAQs
How is your chicken raised? Are your farm practices humane & organic?
We know what it's like to care about what you eat and to feel lost as to where to find it or whom to trust. We started out just the same way. When you start learning more about the food system, there's no turning back.
At Wild Harmony Farm, we are dedicated to raising meat lovingly, humanely, and with integrity. We raise our animals on pasture and we practice rotational grazing — good for the land, good for the animals, and good for you! This year we’re partnering with another trusted local farm, Normanton Farms (Litchfield, NH), to bring you chicken that’s raised on pasture, moved to fresh grass daily, and fed certified organic feed. These chickens spend their days chasing after bugs and eating green plants as well as organic feed, living as nature intended. (No antibiotics and no hormones!)

Why does the chicken packaging contain water?
The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)does not explicitly require water to be added to chicken packaging in Rhode Island or elsewhere. However, the presence of retained water in raw chicken products is regulated by the USDA. Here's why you might see water in chicken packaging and what the USDA requires regarding it:
- Chilling Process: During processing, poultry carcasses are chilled, often in a "chill-tank" (large vat of cold, moving water) to lower their temperature for food safety purposes.
- Water Absorption: During this chilling, chickens and turkeys will naturally absorb some water, according to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
- Labeling Requirement: If the amount of retained water in raw, single-ingredient chicken exceeds 0.49% of naturally occurring moisture as a result of processing, the packaging must prominently declare this on the label, for example, "up to X% retained water". Establishments must have data supporting this claim.
- Purpose of Labeling: The retained water statement helps consumers make informed purchasing decisions.
- Not an Ingredient: It's important to understand that this retained water is considered incidental to the processing, not an added ingredient.
- No Requirement to Add: Establishments are not required to add water beyond what is absorbed during chilling processes necessary to meet food safety standards.
In essence, if the processing methods used to ensure food safety result in water retention, the amount of water is clearly stated on the label.

Is the chicken refrigerated or frozen? How much freezer space do I need?
We’re partnering with Normanton Farms to bring you pasture-raised chicken that is USDA processed, frozen, and vacuum sealed for best quality.
One chicken box is 18" x 24" X 10" (2.5 cubic feet), about 55 pounds, and contains 11-13 chickens. That translates to about 2.5-3 cu ft of chest freezer space, or about 4-5 cu ft of upright freezer space. (You can stack and store more efficiently in a chest freezer than in an upright freezer or standard fridge freezer.)
Here’s how that breaks down for different freezer sizes:
- Standard fridge: One box of chickens might fit in the freezer of a standard fridge, if you’re okay with not having space for much else. If your freezer is currently full of who knows what, it may be time for a fresh start :)
- 5-7 cu ft chest freezer: These are popular because they’re usually less than $200, and are a good fit for at least 2 chicken boxes, depending on freezer size.
- 12 cu ft chest freezer: Lucky you! You have room for a couple chicken boxes plus ¼ cow and a ½ hog — you’ll be all set! (We still have a few beef quarters left and you can watch for pork reservations in the coming months.)
A chest freezer is a terrific investment if you want to buy local, eat well, and save money!
Why choose whole, pasture-raised chicken?
🌱Budget-friendly: Less cutting and wrapping means lower cost than cuts like breasts and thighs, so you get more for your money. Plus, whole chickens come with a bonus: bones to throw in your slow cooker for easy broth packed with nutrients and flavor.
🌱Delicious: Ask any whole-chicken convert and they'll tell you that going whole is the tastiest way to enjoy chicken. You won’t need any of those recipes for smothering sad skinless, boneless breasts in mayonnaise, sour cream, and cheese 😉 Instead, you’ll be starting with naturally delicious whole chicken. Skin and bones contribute to juicy cooking and incredible flavor — especially when it's real pasture-raised, small farm chicken!
🌱Convenient: Whole chickens are easy to roast in the oven or cook in the slow cooker, and we’ll share recipes! Serve with your choice of veggies on the first night for a convenient, wholesome meal, and then turn the leftovers into tacos or chicken salad on the second day.
🌱REAL pasture-raised: Unlike the "greenwashed" brands you might find at the grocery store, chicken from our local farm partners at Normanton Farms is truly pasture-raised. These chickens spend their days chasing after bugs and eating green plants as well as organic feed, living as nature intended. (No antibiotics and no hormones!)
Are the chicken boxes only whole chickens?
Yes, the chicken boxes contain only whole chickens. No parts.
