One of the greatest misunderstandings in the mainstream media is about the environmental impact of beef. Rightfully so. It’s complicated.
I agree that feedlot beef production is bad for our environment, but IT’S NOT THE COW’S FAULT.
From all that I’ve learned about the environmental impact of agriculture, tillage (the act of plowing the soil) is probably the most damaging.
Why is tillage so bad?
- It releases formerly sequestered carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
- It destroys soil structure and soil life.
- It sends dust particles into the air, which leads to the torrential flooding that is becoming more and more common.
- It exposes the soil to erosion.
- It decreases the ability of the soil to absorb rainfall, leading to more droughts.
The ironic thing is that fake meats are championed as the climate solution to our damaging agricultural system. What they don’t talk about is that all fake meats are created from crops that were grown using ALOT OF TILLAGE.
So what’s the solution?
Grow food in some way that eliminates tillage. There are a handful of no-till organic grain and vegetable producers, but it’s very rare, and impossible to find in a grocery store.
Regeneratively-produced, 100% grass-fed beef checks all the boxes.
Using specific management practices, our beef cattle are able to:
- Sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the soil
- Improve soil structure and soil life
- Decrease erosion, even on land that was formerly at high risk of erosion
- Improve the soils ability absorb water, which decreases flooding AND droughts
You don’t have to choose between eating HEALTHY, DELICIOUS FOOD and TAKING CARE OF THE PLANET.
Have both!!!
